Protecting Your Home from Burglaries: Lineup Security's Tips

Home Security Tips

1. Evaluate your home from the outside

This step requires you to look at your house as though you’ve never seen it before. If you needed to get inside your locked house, what would you do? Get inside the mind of a thief, and secure any weaknesses that you find in your home’s access points, such as weak locks, broken windows, or unlocked entry points.

2. Provide continuous deterrent

Regardless of what you see on TV, most crooks aren’t interested in breaking into a house if someone is home. Their job is much easier when they know that the house is empty, so create the illusion that it never is. Use lights on timers and motion detector exterior lights that will leave burglars uncertain if you are home. They will move on to an easier target.

3. Take a safe vacation

When you are away for an extended period of time, it becomes easier for thieves to determine that you are gone. Take steps to make it less obvious that you are out of town, such as continuing lawn service or snow removal, having a neighbor collect mail, and having your calls forwarded. A house sitter is a great alternative to leaving your home empty for long periods of time.

4. Install a high quality alarm system

Your alarm system should not have wires that can be cut from outside your home. Burglars know how to deactivate these systems. If your alarm has a habit of frequently going off, have it repaired. You don’t want your neighbors to get in the habit of ignoring your annoying alarm so that it is pointless when needed.

5. Use common sense

We all get in bad habits of leaving doors unlocked, not changing locks when keys are lost, or leaving “hidden” keys in obvious locations. Another common mistake is leaving notes on your door, announcing to thieves that you’re not home. It only takes a few moments for one of these bad habits to cause thousands of dollars of loss and even more serious damage to your family’s sense of security.
